JOB TITLE: Residential Support Worker (RSW)

REPORTS TO: Manager/Deputy Manager

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To join a supportive and experienced team within a small community home with  young people with mild-moderate learning disabilities, our aim being to ensure the physical, social, cultural, emotional and developmental needs of the clients are met fully at all times.

DUTIES

General

  • To join a team of residential support staff to ensure that safe and appropriate care practices are maintained at all times.  To support the Manager in all aspects of the establishments operation
  • To provide a safe, warm and supportive environment to our young people
  • To always work as a pro active team member who contributes fully to the team at all times
  • To prepare and cook meals for the house when required
  • Once in post you must have a commitment to self-learning and developing your knowledge of the legislation that governs how we care for young people within a residential environment
  • Participate in planned supervision and undertake delegated duties as required
  • To take responsibility for any monies that you are required to use and always keep receipts for any money spent
  • To be available to cover staff shortfalls and absences and work in a flexible manner
  • Work under the direction of others and on your own initiative
  • To take on the role of a key worker as and when required by the Manager and work in line with the key worker policy
  • To always work in an inclusive manner and ensure that you value the young people and make them feel valued and always encourage their self-esteem

Health and safety 

  • You must ensure you work within the companies Policies and procedures around Health and safety such as implementing and adhering to the risk assessments that are in place.
  • The team must work together to ensure they maintain a clean and hygienic environment
  • You must report faults appropriately through the Maintenance log and the most Senior person on duty before you finish your shift
  • To ensure the relevant guidelines around cooking are adhered to such as taking food temperatures of prepared meals.

Administration

  • It is very important that you are able to write clear and concise reports and are able to make daily entries into care plans that are appropriate and meaningful.
  • You must be able to collate the information that has been recorded within a care plan to write a report whenever your Manager or Senior requests you to do so.
  • You must be able to fill in the necessary logbooks when required according to the policies and procedures
  • To attend review and planning meetings when required
  • To maintain a regular system of recording in connection with each young person and be involved in the implementation of care plans
  • To ensure you keep up to date with care plans when they are updated and put into practice the new information
  • To deal with daily telephone enquiries and undertake administrative duties as required e.g. (log book, daily information sheets, accident book, incident forms etc)

Responsibilities

  • To foster and encourage, whenever appropriate contact between young people and their families.  To maintain good liaison and co-operate with external agencies e.g. social workers, doctors, school teachers etc
  • To develop a responsible attitude with the Young people in regard to the fabric, furnishings, equipment, supplies and services in/or to the establishment and to support them in all domestic aspects of both their own personal space and the communal area’s of the home
  • To demonstrate both sensitivity and appropriate assertiveness, whilst working in a pressured environment with groups of diverse young people and staff.  Carry out the duties of the post in a mature and responsible manner, seeking and receiving support as necessary.
  • To use physical intervention but only if trained to do so if a young person’s behaviour is dangerous to others or themselves, in accordance with Footsteps policies and relevant legislation
  • To take part in an on call rota system if the need arises.

 
Any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Manager
